The Shift Change
The mill whistle at Pacolet did not so much sound as take the air apart. Helen Cole learned that before she learned long division. At 5:58 in the morning her father was already on the porch with his dinner pail, and the house smelled of coffee and the cotton dust he had never quite washed out of the cuffs.
She was nine the first winter she understood the whistle was a clock for other people’s lives. “That’s first shift coming off,” her mother said, not looking up from the biscuits. “Don’t you wave from the window. They want to get home.”
